When a baby is born a cord that is connected to him and to her mother is still connected until the doctor cut it. The cord is called umbilical cord; it is the connection of the baby in the womb and to his mother, but now when the baby is born it is needed to be cut because the baby doesn’t need it anymore. But once it is cut there are blood that it is remaining in the blood vessel it is called the umbilical cord blood or so as cord blood.
Cord blood contains almost all of the kind of blood; red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. This cord blood can be use as an alternate to bone marrow. It is also used as treatment for a lot of diseases because of its content; hematopoietic a blood forming stems cells that are same with the bone marrow. Diseases that can be treated with cord blood according to studies are myelodysplasia, lymphoma, and the most known leukemia. One of the advantages of the cord blood is it doesn’t requires blood matches like ordinary blood needs. Another one, blood cord has a lower risk of viral infections than others.
